As you reflect on the year past and plan for a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year, I hope you will take a moment to consider how you might make 2014 brighter for someone in need.
Conflict. In 2011, Mara and her son Rah were living in South Carolina when she came to US VET’s Advanced Women’s Program, a program located at Century Villages at Cabrillo. While in that program, she received counseling and case management, working hard to better her situation. Through Oasis, she attended classes, receiving certificates in Parenting, Personal Enrichment, Career Planning and Financial Planning. Her six year old son Rah received a scholarship at a local private school and is currently attending 1st grade. In April 2013, Mara and her son moved into the Family Commons at Cabrillo, a permanent supportive housing development located at the Villages. Today, Mara is a full time student at Long Beach City College and is in a Licensed Vocational Nursing Degree (LVN) Program. She hopes to eventually transfer to Cal State University Long Beach for her Registered Nursing Degree.
Mara and her son are just one of many families that OASIS helps – help that is especially important during the holidays. | SUSTAINING SPONSOR—$20,000 Support an entire month of Oasis Community Center Life Skills Classes, drop in services, and Workforce Development Activities that increase employment skills and help residents achieve self-sufficiency as well as manage the robust volunteer and internship program at the Oasis Center.CONTRIBUTING SPONSOR— $10,000 Support an entire month of community development activities designed to increase resident engagement and leadership and build a healthy connected community.SUPPORTING SPONSOR— $5,000 Support an entire month of children’s programming include playcare so parents can attend classes and the Oasis Center’s afterschool enrichment program. FRIEND OF THE CENTER—$1,000 Allow 40 residents to attend Adult Life Skills Classes designed to increase skills and capacity in the areas of financial literacy, parenting, career development, computer literacy, and personal enrichment.
