American Planning Association Honors CVC

We are thrilled to announce that the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) has recognized CVC with an Award of Merit in the Opportunity & Empowerment category for our Cabrillo Gateway and Anchor Place developments, which serve veterans and families at risk of homelessness. CVC will be among six Long Beach based projects to be presented with an award at the annual APA Awards Ceremony taking place on June 16. KaBOOM! Beautification Project

In February, a group of students from Westerly School came to the CVC campus to lend a helping hand. They wasted no time, picked up shovels and began working on cleaning up the KaBOOM! Playground.  “It wasn’t just showing up for them,” said David Parram, Director of Student affairs at Westerly and Youth Curriculum Chair for Leadership Long Beach, “they had to do research, make plans and contacts, and even obtain funding.” He went on to explain that one of the goals of his Service Learning class is to teach students to go out and find something new to get involved with and to make a difference. CVC Wins Green Nonprofit of the Year Award at Green Prize Festival

Century Villages at Cabrillo is honored to have been recognized as Green Nonprofit of the Year at the Green Prize Festival held at Admiral Kidd Park on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia joined Century staff for the day-long event highlighting urban farmers, green chefs, artists, green technology, and environmental organizations. William Harris

Resident Vet Finds A Job Close To Home

What do you do when your only source of income is General Relief, you have had a couple major surgeries, have a difficult time walking, are repeatedly being told what you cannot do and not finding support from those around you? If you are Mr. William Harris, you keep your head up, your disposition positive and stay determined to reach your goals. A couple months ago, as he walked around the CVC campus, William noticed a sign for Walton Construction at the Anchor Place construction site. Following his intuition, he spoke with a few construction workers and got to know them. William’s commitment and drive as an individual showed through, and he soon found himself in the construction trailer interviewing for a job. LABC Honors Gateway with Architectural Award

The Los Angeles Business Council presented CVC with the 2016 LA Architectural Award in the Housing category for our striking new 80-unit Cabrillo Gateway development. It’s a great honor for our hard-working development team to be recognized. The open spaces for residents and inspiring work environment for our employees will have  a tremendous positive impact on the community, and our next project, Anchor Place, will be even bigger and greater–so, keep those awards coming! CVC Breaks Ground on Anchor Place and Social Hall

State and city officials, investors, and representatives from a development team of more than 30 agencies gathered at the Century Villages at Cabrillo on April 6, 2016, to celebrate the groundbreaking of Anchor Place and the adjacent Social Hall renovation. As CVC’s fifth phase of campus development, Anchor Place will provide 120 permanent supportive homes for veterans and families at risk of homelessness. Located at the foot of River Avenue, the mixed population LEED-certified development will expand upon our permanent supportive housing offerings while providing extensive service and amenity space. Immediately next door, the historic hub of the Savannah Cabrillo Naval Housing Complex is undergoing a major rehabilitation to restore the Social Hall while retaining the building’s architectural character and historic place in the community. The restoration will upgrade the exterior building envelope and replace major building systems, transforming the main hall into a multifunctional, divisible space featuring a multi-media wall and a modernized home for US VETS Career Center. The Anchor Place development coupled with the social hall renovation and larger site improvements to River Avenue will create a future hub for transit activity on campus, improving access to vital services and job centers while creating a more pedestrian friendly environment. Together, these developments will provide the Villages at Cabrillo and our future 1,500 residents with a built environment that is conducive to the transformation we seek: health & wellness, personal development and restoration of hope. CVC’S RESIDENTS ENJOY A DAY OF WELLNESS AND FUN!

Thank yregou all for helping to make our recent Health Fair and Spring Festival a success! The weather was beautiful, the music and games were fun, and the hands-on demonstrations and exhibitors were great.  The event was so large it spanned across the grand lawn, the courtyard, and Cabrillo Gateway! It was amazing to see all of the energy, and most importantly we have received nothing but positive feedback from the over 300 residents who attended.  The combination of interactive booths, health information, hands on demonstrations, and fun wellness activities proved very successful and we couldn’t have done it with the support of over 30 community partners who hosted a table or activity (listed below). A big thanks goes out to our awesome volunteers from AmeriCorps Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County who were instrumental in planning this event! And of course to all of the CVC staff, especially the Oasis and event planning teams, our community volunteers from the boys groups, resident volunteers from Cabrillo Gateway and US VETS, volunteers from our partner agencies, CVC interns and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the event a success for our community.

Thanks to all of our supporters including Tesoro Corporation who help underwrite resource fairs like these we were able to provide crucial health and community information to our residents while offering fun family friendly games and activities, enjoy a live band, and of course food and drinks all free of charge.  In addition to providing resources to the community, events like these provide an opportunity for neighbors to come together and share a lunch and the day visiting and getting to know each other–which ultimately strengthens our community.

Novogradac Features Cabrillo Gateway!

Cabrillo Gatweway featured on the cover of Novogradac Journal of Tax CreditsCentury Villages at Cabrillo continues to gain recognition among affordable housing insiders, and this month’s front cover feature in the Novogradac Journal of Tax Credits may be our greatest honor yet. The publication is perhaps the most important voice in affordable housing and the article does a great job of summarizing everything that makes CVC special, including our most recent LEED Platinum Award winning development, Cabrillo Gateway and The Children’s Clinic, “Serving Children and Their Families” (TCC), our newest health center located on the ground floor of the Cabrillo Gateway which supports 10 new jobs for clinical and support staff and expects to see about 3,000 patients every year. CVC GOES PLATINUM!

We are pleased to report that our Cabrillo Gateway project has achieved the highest LEED for HOMES designation of Platinum, in recognition of its energy efficiency and environmental design.  This recognition is the result of a concerted effort by our design team, LEED AP construction manager, green rater, contractor and subcontractors, among others, to deliver an efficient, sustainable and environmentally-sensitive building.  Some examples of our buildings features that contributed to this rating are as follows:
  • Solar thermal hot water heating system
  • Photovoltaic array that produces clean energy to offset common area load
  • Cool roof
  • High efficiency indoor air filtering (MERV 13 filtration)
  • High efficiency irrigation
  • Very high efficiency indoor fixtures
  • Energy efficiency (exceed Title 24 2008 standard by more than 35%)
  • Use of precut framing packages
  • 81% of construction waste diverted for recycling
  • Environmentally sensitive carpets and natural flooring products

HOLIDAY HELP NEEDED!

Thanks to your generosity last holiday season Century Villages at Cabrillo was able to provide gifts to hundreds of children living on site.  This year we are focusing our efforts on our newest development Cabrillo Gateway which is now home to 80 families including 150 children. All of our families were homeless before moving into their new apartment and continue to struggle to make ends meet as they settle in and set up their new home. Since this will be their first winter here at CVC, Oasis’ Resident Services team will be providing assistance with food and gifts which will help our families have a less stressful and enjoyable holiday season. Together we will ensure our newest and most vulnerable families will have a joyous holiday in their new home! You can help by…
  • Adopting-A-Family ~ we are in need of at least 80 donors to adopt all of our families at Cabrillo Gateway
  • Collecting ~ non-perishable food items for holiday meals and beyond
  • Donating ~ $10 Albertson’s gift cards for fresh food, ham, and turkeys for the families
